Hit The Street, Protest Hardship, Sheik Gumi Tells Nigerians

Controversial Islamic cleric Sheik Dr. Ahmad Gumi has called on Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests to voice their grievances and drive governmental change. In a video clip obtained by SaharaReporters, Sheik Gumi stressed the importance of non-violent demonstrations, warning against violence or incitement.

“Politicians are very stubborn; it is mass protests that disturb them,” Gumi stated.

Addressing concerns about potential unrest, Sheik Gumi differentiated Nigeria’s diverse society from past protests in countries like Sudan, Lebanon, and Liberia, which he described as “family feuds” that can be dangerous. He highlighted Nigeria’s unique mix of ethnicities, religions, cultures, and tribes, noting internal tensions even within religious sects like the Izala in Nigeria.

He criticized the government’s inconsistent stance on protests, pointing out that in 2015, Muhammadu Buhari and other All Progressives Congress (APC) officials led protests against the previous government. “Then, protest was legal but now it’s illegal,” he lamented.

“God willing, the protest will proceed peacefully, and the government must understand and respond positively to the language of protest,” Sheik Gumi concluded, calling for constructive dialogue and meaningful reforms.

Gumi’s comments come amid growing discontent in northern Nigeria, where residents are planning protests to address economic issues such as rising inflation and poverty under President Tinubu’s administration.
